ESTELLE - SHINE
Estelle hit it big with this album mostly thanks to the single featuring king douche himself - Kanye West. I never realised what a self important fuckwit he was until I heard him speak rather than sing. Though at the time of this album I was still oblivious to the douchebaggery, free to enjoy the song on its own merits.
I bought this record when I was going through a mental crisis of sorts and became obsessed with fun runs culminating in a half marathon. What ever possessed me? Once you hit a level of fitness matched by the ability to tune out the reality of running for hours without stopping you can pretty much do anything. I started to kid myself ‘hey, why not a full marathon and then maybe scale Mt Everest next?’. Clearly the endorphins went to my head. I ran to this album, albeit, skipping over a few songs that didn’t cut it.
American Boy also reminds me of Spin class - they used that song to death in the warm up. So now everytime I hear it I imagine myself peddling a stationary bike in a dark room with a sweaty fat man in ill fitting singlet and shorts panting next to me. Or worse still, a woman in front wearing a g-string and leggings...atomic wedgie indeed!
